On Wednesday 30 November 2005, 26 crews of courageous individuals left La Gomera in the Canary Islands to embark on an amazing feat of strength and endurance, to row 2,550nm across the Atlantic Ocean to Antigua in the West Indies in the Atlantic Rowing Race 2005. Competing in purposely designed and built ocean rowing boats against each other and within the Solo, Pairs or Fours classes, the crews competed on a level playing field governed by a set of Event Rules, to be the first to cross the finish line, in the quickest possible time. Four drama packed months later and the last boat in the fleet, Boat No. 15 – Sedna Solo crewed by the only single handed female ocean rower, Roz Savage triumphantly arrived in Antigua on Monday 13 March 2006, to bring this most spectacular event to a close. Woodvale Events Managing Director, Simon Chalk comments: “As a spectator, the Atlantic Rowing Race 2005 has been a most exciting event and to watch the tactics of each team come into play as the fleet jostle for the front positions has been fascinating.
“The Atlantic Rowing Race is one of the few events in the world where people of all ages, capabilities and sex can compete on equal terms and this is clearly evident in the official race rankings”.
With the end of race scrutineering of all the finished boats now complete, any relevant penalties incurred have been applied to race crossing times and Race Organiser, Woodvale Events is now pleased to formally announce that the overall winner of the Atlantic Rowing Race 2005 is Woodvale Pairs Boat, Boat No. 8 - C² crewed by British men Clint Evans and Chris Andrews. Chris Andrews from Boat No. 8 C² comments: “We are delighted to be recorded as the overall winners of the Atlantic Rowing Race 2005 and it feels great after the three previous races, to be the first British crew to win this event.
“Although with the Rules of the Race, we have been recorded as the overall winning team, we do not what this to detract from the huge achievement of the three crews that crossed the finish line ahead of us”.
The top four places in the Atlantic Rowing Race 2005 are allocated as follows: First - Boat No. 8, C² (Woodvale Pairs) Clint Evans & Chris Andrews (GB) Second - Boat No. 6, Atlantic 4 (ORS Fours) George Simpson, David Martin, Glynn Coupland & Neil Wightwick (GB) Third - Boat No. 24, All Relative (ORS Fours) Justin Adkin, Martin Adkin, Robert Adkin & James Green (GB) Fourth - Boat No. 30, Spirit of EDF (Woodvale Pairs) Ben Fogle & James Cracknell (GB) The weather conditions in the Atlantic this year have been exceptional, with Hurricane Epsilon, two tropical storms including the latest ever recorded tropical storm in the mid Atlantic route, and three low pressure systems all occurring during the course of the event. Whether a team finished first or last, the achievement is just as great – to take on and conquer the mighty Atlantic Ocean! | Overall Race Rankings | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Rank Order | Boat No. | Boat Name | Team Names | Class | Arrival Date | Time | Crossing Duration | Rules Broken | Penality (If Applicable) | | 1st | No. 8 | C2 | Chris Andrews & Clint Evans | Pairs | 20-Jan-06 | 1415 GMT | 51 days, 2 hours & 10 mins | None | N/A | | 2nd | No.6 | Atlantic 4 | George Simpson, David Martin, Glynn Coupland & Neil Wightwick | Fours | 19-Jan-06 | 0226 GMT | 49 days, 14 hours & 21 mins | Used 60L of Water Ballast (first 5 on medical advice) | Drop one place | | 3rd | No. 24 | All Relative | Justin Adkin, Martin Adkin, Robert Adkin & James Green | Fours | 08-Jan-06 | 1537 GMT | 39 days, 3 hours & 35 mins | Used all 120L of Water Ballast | Drop two places | | 4th | No. 30 | Spirit of EDF Energy | Ben Fogle & James Cracknell | Pairs | 19-Jan-06 | 0713 GMT | 49 days, 19 hours & 08 mins | Used 60L of Water Ballast (first 5 on medical advice) | Drop one place | | 5th | No. 20 | Bout de Vie | Frank Bruno & Dominique Benassi | Pairs | 23-Jan-06 | 1536 GMT | 54 days, 3 hours & 31 mins | None | N/A | | 6th | No. 14 | Atlantic Prince | Dan Darley & Rich DeWire | Pairs | 28-Jan-06 | 0021 GMT | 58 days, 12 hours & 16 mins | None | N/A | | 7th | No. 27 | Team Scandlines | Christain Petersen & Soren Sprogoe | Pairs | 28-Jan-06 | 2111 GMT | 59 days, 19 hours & 6 mins | None | N/A | | 8th | No. 33 | Row 4 Cancer | Liz O'Keeffe & Richard Mayon-White | Pairs | 30-Jan-06 | 0701 GMT | 60 days, 18 hours & 56 mins | None | N/A | | 9th | No. 10 | Mayabrit | Andrew Barnett & Juan Carlos Sagastume Bandana | Pairs | 03-Feb-06 | 0122 GMT | 64 days, 13 hours & 17 mins | None | N/A | | 10th | No. 16 | Gurkha Spirit | Al Howard & Nick Rowe | Pairs | 05-Feb-06 | 0121 GMT | 66 days 13 hours & 16 mins | None | N/A | | 11th | No. 17 | Mission Atlantic | Paula Evemy, Kathy Tracey, Lois Rawlins-Duquamin & Sarah Day | Fours | 05-Feb-05 | 1925 GMT | 67 days, 7 hours & 20 mins | None | N/A | | 12th | No. 18 | Mark 3 | Rob Eustace & Peter Williams | Pairs | 06-Feb-06 | 1308 GMT | 68 days, 1 hour & 3 mins | None | N/A | | 13th | No. 3 | Christina | Paul Gleeson & Tori Holmes | Pairs | 23-Feb-06 | 1117 GMT | 85 days, 6 hours 12 mins * | Used 10L of Water Ballast | 7 Hour Time Penalty | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Disqualified Teams In Order of Line Honours | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | 1. | No. 22 | Atlantic Warrior | Tom Bright & Charles Bairsto | Pairs | 28-Jan-06 | 0020 GMT | 58 days, 12 hours & 15 mins ** | Tow required before crossing the race finish line | Disqualified | | 2. | No. 4 | Row 4 Life | Charlie Woodward-Fisher & Philip Harris | Pairs | 29-Jan-06 | 0012 GMT | 59 days, 12 hours & 7 mins ** | Tow required before crossing the race finish line | Disqualified | | 3. | No. 88 | Charmed Life | Andrew Morris & Mick Dawson | Pairs | 05-Feb-06 | 1450 GMT | 61 days, 2 hours & 50 mins * | Started a week later than the rest of the fleet | Disqualified | | 4. | No. 5 | Pacific Pete | Chris Martin | Solo | 07-Feb-06 | 0324 GMT | 68 days, 15 hours & 19 mins | Received outside assistance via the Support Vessel | Disqualified | | 5. | No. 7 | Making Waves | Rebecca Thorpe & Stephanie Temperton | Pairs | 10-Feb-06 | 1029 GMT | 71 days 22 hours & 24 mins ** | Tow required before crossing the race finish line | Disqualified | | 6. | No. 11 | Rowgirls.com | Sally Kettle, Clarie Mills & Sue McMilan | Fours | 15-Feb-06 | 2130 GMT | 77 days, 9 hours & 25 mins | Received outside assistance via the Support Vessel | Disqualified | | 7. | No. 15 | Sedna Solo | Roz Savage | Solo | 13-Mar-06 | 1748 GMT | 103 days, 5 hours & 45 mins | Didn't cross the finish line within the 1nm outer mark | Disqualified |
